But fate had caused her mother somehow to hire Ella instead. As she had watched Ella performing her maid duties in the morning, she did wonder, but she was still prepared to hate her.

But when Ella had come into the dance room, her world changed. She remembered Ella's kind and smiling face, the soft way she spoke, her giggling as she mispronounced Mei's name, and the enthusiasm she radiated. She charmed Mei immediately, and as she began her lesson, talking and guiding as she did so, Mei could feel her hate melt away, and she felt that she was receiving more love and friendship in that room than she had felt the rest of her life combined. Ella seemed to like her, care about her, and to be a friend! The touches of Ella's hand as she guided Mei's arms, her waist, her thighs, into the right postures, were like the hands of a lover must be like - so gentle but knowing just what was required...
