the alley appeared empty in the cold light of dawn, though a Certain House still had gay lanterns outside it, shedding a warmer reddish light [the cellophane had faded to orange] to hint at the artificial warmth of purchased love.  I was waiting for the mark to come out. then? then the cold alley would have a colder inhabitant... at least, until the cops picked him up out of the puddles. Me? I'd be long gone.

Marlon Derubio came out of the place at last.  He had probably been sampling the wares, but he owned the joint. And how he got the staff didn't bear scrutiny. Let's just say it involved involuntary addiction to the latest craze in the metro, and once hooked, they were putty in his hands. I would have liked to have wired him up to feed current to his pleasure centre until he was hooked; but I wanted him dead more. I'd picked what I though was an artistic way, however.  He wore, as he always did, his hand-made leather-soled shoes. I was wearing crepe soles, and I stayed out of the puddles. He had little choice; I had spread the water about so he had to step in it, which he did with an expression of distaste.  I threw the switch.

The power cable ran off the local supply grid, stepped down enough so the current was not enough to throw him off. He stood there screaming and shaking, and smoke came off his expensive wool suit.
