Kawanabe Kyōsai (河鍋 暁斎; 1831 – 1889) was a Japanese artist known for his dynamic and often satirical paintings and prints. His art style is a fusion of traditional Japanese techniques with Western influences, characterised by bold brushstrokes, vibrant colours, and a playful sense of humour. Kyosai primarily used ink and colour on silk or paper, creating works that ranged from detailed landscapes and portraits to humorous and grotesque scenes. He was associated with the ukiyo-e (traditional Japanese woodblock print) movement and the later Meiji period art scene, contributing significantly to the development of modern Japanese art.
