In Robert Stevenson's "Treasure Island", Billy Bons resting in the Admiral Benbow Inn after a stroke, receives a visit by a blind beggar. Turns out that it was one of pirates from Captain Flint's crew nicknamed Blind Pew and he brought the Black Spot - a sign of judgement which means only one - death. Billy Bons was so afraid of Blind Pew that he had the second stroke very soon and died.

The origin of that might be in the tradition of the Caribbean pirates of showing an ace of spades to a person condemned as traitor.
