Half-baked conceptual pieces from an idea I had years ago: The elements are things that transcend humanity in scale to a higher degree than we think we transcend a bacterium or a virus, right?

Channeling that power would, one presumes, quickly use up the host in the same way superpowers in general were fatal to the heroes in the 1980s sci-fi comic "Strikeforce Morituri."

More recently, though, I've rethought the original concept with the idea that energy cannot be destroyed ... and it occurs to me that channeling the power of the elements wouldn't kill a host ... but it would be very painful and result in constant breakdown and regeneration.

So the constant hints of red in these ... even for water ... are appropriate given that understanding. We could be heroes ... but just one day might be enough to drive us to madness.
