In this plate, the protagonist of the novel, George Bailey, contemplates existence and his recent sufferings from a bridge. He soon meets the angel Clarence, to whom he continually refers as “Spirit,” much to Clarence’s annoyance. Clarence shows him interactive visions of the "other-world" in which George Bailey had never been born in order to convince him to continue living his disordered, miserable, thankless life.
It should be noted that the firm which engraved and printed the illustrated plates in this book were well-known for being drunk and hiring only German and Bohemian apprentices; some typographical errors were present in all plates.
Bohemians!! shudder...
