But strange things began to happen in the village then,
As locals started vanishing without a trace, again and again.

The rumors spread like wildfire, people talking all sorts of things,
Of a young hermit turned cannibal who lived among the trees.
They said he'd gone mad, lost his mind from the forest life,
And now he dined on human flesh, consuming it with a knife.

The locals were trembling with fear, as in just a few short days,
More than a dozen people had gone missing in mysterious ways.
One morning, my grandfather and dad were gone without a trace,
And I made the decision to set off and find the hermit's hiding place.

Under the cover of night, I crept up to the forester's house,
And I poured arsenic in the cauldron on the stove, quiet as a mouse.
The whole village soon realized who the murderer was, with shock and dread,
As my own granny took ill and died the very next day from the poison effects!

Who made the villagers' blood run cold.

With my toy sword in hand, I grumbled, vowed to slay the scoundrel,
But my grandmother's response was only to instruct and counsel,
- Listen to granny, behave and be good,
Don't wander at night, don't go into the woods.

My grandmother told me with a shudder,
How the cannibal roasted his neighbor and made him fodder,
Cooked him over the fire and ate him with butter.

- Sleep tight, be still, don't make a peep,
Lest the cannibal comes and takes you to keep,
And tosses you in the pot as his midnight treat
