In the late 21st Century, humanity intercepted a signal from space. At first it was hard to interpret, but with immense effort and funding, the code was cracked.

It was a message of peace, containing information that led to revolutionary advances in every field of science and technology. It lifted humanity out of the late-industrial era, ushering in a truly new epoch. New energy and materials technologies, coupled with breakthroughs in economics, social and biological sciences, allowed the construction of vast, clean industrial complexes, seemingly limitless food farms, and a radical expansion of the human population. And it allowed the construction of enormous spacecraft capable of hyperspace travel.

One million humans were selected by lottery to be the first to meet the advanced species that had mentored us. But no sooner had Earth's President set foot on the pristine alien ship, than he learned that the whole thing had been a ruse to attract intelligent creatures as a food supply.
