Paul Poiret

Paul Poiret (1879 – 1944) was a French couturier and a leading figure in the world of fashion pre-World War I. Known for his Neoclassical and Orientalist styles, he was instrumental in the Art Deco movement. Poiret’s innovative designs, such as the “lampshade” tunic and “harem” trousers, were characterised by their vivid colours and enigmatic silhouettes. He pioneered a radical approach to dressmaking that relied on draping rather than tailoring and pattern-making. His designs were often constructed of rectangles and cut along straight lines, reflecting his inspiration from antique and regional dress. This approach not only changed the course of costume history but also steered it in the direction of modern design. Poiret’s work with fabric directly on the body and his use of materials such as cotton, silk, metallic thread, and fur further exemplify his innovative techniques.
