By its character, the *spiridus* can be compared to the protective spirit genie from Roman mythology, to the Elf and Kobold dwarves from the mythology of the Nordic peoples, to the family demon Lutin from the French, to the Brownie little man from Scottish tales, to the Leprechaun from Irish mythology and to the Domovoi spirit from Slavic mythology.

In Romanian traditions, the *spiridus* is a devil incarnate or depicted as an animal - often in the form of a chicken - that lives in a household, bringing good luck to its owner. The *spiridusi* are born from eggs: usually an abandoned egg that must be kept in the armpit and incubated there for 40 days.
