Bright and Basic

Three geldings working in their room,
Way back there in their beehive block.
An old grey mare is on the phones,
Dull eyes are never too far from the clock.

The chestnut paws the ground in anger.
The brown horse bites back, but all in fear.
The appaloosa’s looking out the window
At a desiccated forest, shredded bare.

Emasculated maybe, but they know
That they are not anathema anymore,
The stamp has become stronger than the pen was,
For it can rock the stallion to the core.

At least they have the passion of self-interest.
The boredom’s compensated by the might.
With hay and fresh green paddocks, they sleep sounder
Than the stallion, always priming for a fight.
