Seven Persimmons

Muqi (c. 1210–1269) was a Chinese Chan (Zen) Buddhist monk and painter of the Southern Song Dynasty, renowned for his expressive ink paintings that emphasized spontaneity and simplicity. His works, such as Six Persimmons and Guanyin with Crane and Gibbons, reflect Chan ideals through bold brushstrokes, fluid composition, and minimal detail. Unlike court painters, Muqi prioritized spiritual depth over technical perfection, influencing both Chinese and Japanese Zen painting traditions. Though underappreciated in China during his time, his works became highly revered in Japan, shaping the aesthetics of Zen art for centuries. (OpenAI, 2025)
