Skipper White Didn't Sign Up for This (fictional character)

Skipper White is the assistant police chief of the fictional Tennessee town where I base some of my books (the rest being set in Nashville). When he gets called in from yard work to the scene of a horrific crime, he quits his job and his role as acting police chief, forcing the real chief to come back early from maternity leave.

What's the nobler path: To charge on into a situation you're not sure you can handle and change achieving greatness or to accept your limitations and trust that someone else can do the job better than you can?

Either way, the town's baseball legend is bound to lose. (Based on a character from the novel about high school football and toxic masculinity.)
