William Kentridge

William Kentridge (1955 – ) is a renowned artist from South Africa. He is particularly known for his unique art style that combines drawing, writing, film, performance, music, theatre, and collaborative practices. His work is grounded in politics, science, literature, and history, yet maintains a space for contradiction and uncertainty. Kentridge’s art is associated with the movements of Video Art and Post-Modernism. His technique involves creating films from drawings in a bold, dark, and memorable style. Unlike traditional animation that employs multiple drawings to denote change and movement, Kentridge erases and alters a single, stable drawing while recording the changes with stop-motion camera work. He has experimented with a broad range of media, including etching, lithography, aquatint, drypoint, photogravure, and woodcut. His work reflects a larger European tradition of artists such as Honoré Daumier, Francisco de Goya, and William Hogarth.
