It did, for pre-certification "hot and high" (less dense air) trials in February '73.  Even as a lover of aircraft, Concorde really was in a class of its own. There were further supersonic trials off-shore from Cape Town in '76.

I never saw Concorde but it must have been very exciting.

Your paragraph is very expressive, the Volvo is eye candy for me but what impresses me the most, this ould easily be on the road through the North Eastern Cape / Free state, somewhere around Aliwal North. Even thelight says that - or maybe I am just projecting.
Anyway - I love your "The year we said goodbye series" and if I am picking up the pieces coreectly it happened to be a whole year after I was born 😊

I was delighted by the way this turned out.  Even the signs work.  This actually occurred in late '73 after the Saudis cut off most of global oil supply (a few months later than implied in the story).  The story is (mostly) fictional, but is bent around real events to resemble a memoir.

"Dad had bought a Volvo 122s for the journey.  Even in the larger car, it was a very long trip broken only by an overnight stop in Bloem.  The national speed limit had been reduced to 80 km/h to conserve fuel.  He'd put a sponge under the accelerator pedal, and Bob and I took turns helping him make sure that the B20B engine never nudged the flickering tongue past that magic number.  It felt as slow as the 50 written below it."
