**Jan Toorop** (Johannes Theodorus Toorop; 1858 – 1928) was a Dutch painter, born in the East Dutch Indies (now Indonesia). He made significant contributions to the art world through his work in various styles, including Symbolism, Art Nouveau, and Pointillism. His early work was influenced by the Amsterdam Impressionism movement. Toorop was known for his unique Symbolist style, characterised by dynamic, unpredictable lines based on Javanese motifs, highly stylised willowy figures, and curvilinear designs. He later turned to Art Nouveau styles, in which a similar play of lines was used for decorative purposes, without any apparent symbolic meaning. His extensive oeuvre encompasses a variety of techniques and mediums – from drawing, painting and printmaking, to stained glass. His use of bold colours and dramatic contrasts added an otherworldly quality to his creations.
