Dead Body Reclaimed by Mother Nature

The Gashadokuro is a terrifying creature of Japanese dark mythology, born from the bones and blood of fallen soldiers and famine victims. These giant skeletons, standing over 10 meters tall, are said to wander in deserted areas near mass graves and battlefields, their bones and teeth clattering with an eerie sound.

According to legend, the anger and anguish of the spirits of the dead remain stored in their bones, turning into a deep-seated hatred for all living things. When the Gashadokuro senses a traveler, it approaches stealthily, until it suddenly grabs the hapless victim, biting off their head and drinking their blood in a gruesome display. 

Interestingly, Gashadokuro isn’t being part of traditional Japanese mythology and folklore. It doesn’t belong to the Kamakura, Edo, or even Meiji periods. The first mention of the Gashadokuro comes from a book by Japanese writer Yamauchi Shigeaki, published in 1968. 

The character was based on an engraving by the Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi, who visualized an ancient legend about the events of the 10th century AD. In the legend, Takiyasha, the daughter of Japanese rebel commander in the the Tengyō Rebellion Taira no Masakado, summoned an army of skeletons of human size to fight the Taro Mizukuni army. However, in his engraving, Utagawa drew only one giant skeleton, inspiring the character of the fearsome Gashadokuro.

Despite that, the Gashadokuro has become a prominent figure in popular culture, embodying the dark and terrifying side of Japanese mythology. The legend of the Gashadokuro serves as a chilling reminder of the horrors of war and famine, and the vengeful spirits that may linger long after death.
