Mystique, also known as Raven Darkhölme, is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, most commonly in association with the X-Men. She was created by artist David Cockrum and writer Chris Claremont. Mystique is a mutant, a shapeshifter with the ability to mimic the appearance and voice of any person with exquisite precision. She is one of the most prominent members of the Brotherhood of Mutants, an organization dedicated to mutant superiority over normal humans. Mystique has a long and complicated history in the X-Men comics, often acting as a villain but also sometimes as an ally to the X-Men. Her backstory reveals that she was originally a member of a tribe of mutants called the "Brimstone Collective" and later a member of the Hellfire Club. She has a daughter named Rogue with the villainous Mr. Sinister and an adopted son named Nightcrawler.
