You can probably guess that I love the Jim Carrey movie "The Mask." Near as I can recall, for some time I'd been planning to do something with that character, but I hadn't decided how to approach it. Later, for some  reason, I suddenly felt like doing something offbeat with a living Barbie Doll. Then my brain said: "Hey, why not combine the two ideas? The Mask's magic could bring that Barbie to life when he was in the mood to dance with someone, but he's so zany that he might not even consciously realize what was so unusual about his new girlfriend -- he just senses, in a *vague* sort of way, that she is somehow 'different from all the other girls.'" So I ran with the idea.
