The Venice carnaval celebration

The Venice Carnival originated in the year 1162 to celebrate the military victory of the Venetian Republic over the Patriarch of Aquileia, Ulrich II von Treven. Legend has it that after this victory, people in Venice started to gather and dance in St Mark’s Square, marking the beginning of the festival. Over time, this celebration became official during the Renaissance period. The Carnival evolved into a significant event during the 17th century, maintaining Venice’s prestigious image globally. It was particularly renowned during the 18th century for its festivities that allowed for indulgence and pleasure while also serving as a means to shield Venetians from present and future troubles.
