Featured in both the Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars: The Old Republic video games, Revan was infamous for being a Jedi Knight who then defected to the Sith Empire, became a Sith Lord, and then utilized BOTH sides of the Force in equal measures.
This, essentially, made him what could be called a Gray Force User. Because of this, he was immensely powerful and incredibly hard to defeat, let alone kill, in 1-on-1 combat.
Even after his death, the Sith Lords and Darth's discussed the power and skill that Revan had when he still lived. However, due to his past of being both a Jedi Knight and Sith Lord, this brought a lot of controversy towards Revan as a whole.
As far as we know in SW: TOR, the Jedi have decided to completely ignore and erase Revan's history from their archives and have never once mention him throughout the game. Only with the Sith do we get any mention of Revan early on when exploring the Sith Capital planet of Dromund Kaas.
