I believe he goes to Azkaban at the end of book 5 after his involvement in the Department of Mysteries. Then he gets broken out before the battle with the 7 polyjuiced Harrys. He doesn't go back to Azkaban after the Battle of Hogwarts though, which never really made sense to me, since he escaped from his life imprisonment sentence. 

They were like, he's a jerk but he's harmless
