Question (Vic Sage) It's often interesting to me how people will insist that character remain "in character," but when a really good story is written featuring the character, suddenly it really doesn't matter that much just how consistent the character is depicted. I guess you could argue that there is sort of a quality/recharacterization ratio that "must" be achieved before people will let something go without complaining. If the story is really well written, then people give a lot more leeway with the character stuff.

If the flow of an event (or a chain of such...) or an emotionally-significant moment is strong enough, our sense of self-identity can often become unmoored for a time, until the deluge ends and we can shake it off. Our hero fiction is festooned with emotionally-stunted archetypes that can't stick the landing when gravity reasserts itself, and are often steeped in bad feelings over what they may have done during the worst of the storm.
