Job

He left me with a curt command: "Wait here and don't move!" Then he dashed off to hail a cab, leaving me no chance to object. He vanished in a gust of wind, as if he had wings on his feet. I felt a surge of resentment at his imperious tone. How could he treat me so rudely, as if I had no will of my own? I scanned the dreary Victorian streets, wondering if I should seek some refuge in a nearby tea house. But how would he find me then, if he ever came back for me? I was torn between anger and anxiety, unable to decide what to do. A shop keeper's voice interrupted my thoughts: "Are you ok, ma'am?" He had witnessed the whole scene and looked concerned. "Quite," I lied, trying to hide my irritation. "I have been ordered to wait." He offered me a chair with a sympathetic smile. "Thank you, that would be most welcome, sir." I accepted his kindness and sat down, still staring at the direction he had gone. In my mind, I planned his retribution for leaving me alone.
