Dreams Of Books

... “That’s normal,” Mette said quietly. “It’s not the fabric that’s difficult. It’s letting go of control over how you’re interpreted.”

The tram stopped near the botanical garden.

The two women stepped out, the cool air brushing against them, tugging gently at their garments. Mette walked slowly, confidently. Elin followed, adjusting her hijab as the wind played with its edge.

They entered the garden path between bare-branched trees and frost-touched grass. The world inside was quieter, protected from the street noise. The glasshouses ahead glimmered faintly in the soft grey light. ...

... Elin sighed. “This... this I like.”

Mette turned toward her. “It’s peaceful.”

“No strangers watching. Just trees.”

“And God,” Mette added with a small smile.

Elin laughed softly. “Of course.”

They walked along the gravel path, their steps muffled. The winter stillness wrapped around them. Birds rustled in distant branches. A gardener worked in silence under a greenhouse arch.

Elin spoke again. “You know... I expected to feel erased. Or trapped. But what I feel most is—how little I need to be seen. It’s almost a relief.”

Mette nodded. “That’s the shift. You stop performing your presence. You just exist. For yourself. For your Lord.” ...

... They reached a bench near a small pond, where the reeds swayed and the sky reflected in broken lines. Mette sat first, adjusting the folds of her niqab.

Elin sat beside her and leaned gently into her side.

“Thank you for today,” she said.

“For trusting me?” Mette asked.

Elin nodded. “For walking slowly with me. Not pulling. Just... opening a door.”

They sat in silence, two shapes wrapped in fabric, wrapped in thought. No one interrupted. No one intruded. ...

... Mette sat tall, wrapped in her dark niqab, her eyes soft and alert behind the fabric. She glanced sideways now and then, checking on Elin without speaking. Not hovering. Just being near.

“I feel like everyone’s looking at us,” Elin murmured.

“They are,” Mette answered simply. “But you’ll notice: they don’t see very far.”

Elin looked around. There were glances, yes. Lingering looks. Furrowed brows. One woman quickly turned away when their eyes met.

“It’s strange,” Elin whispered. “I’m more covered than ever, but I feel... exposed.” ...
