Gromnica, the blessed candle

Our Lady of Candlemas, observed on February 2nd, serves as a poignant reminder of winter's halfway point and carries deep Christian significance, symbolizing both purification and the promise of light. This day commemorates the presentation of Christ in the temple and the purification of the Virgin Mary, aligning with Jewish customs. The tradition of blessing candles, especially the "gromnica" in Poland, is a central aspect of the celebration, reflecting Jesus as the light of the world. Historically, these blessed candles were given to the dying as a symbol of divine protection, guiding them through their final journey. The name "gromnica" derives from its believed power to protect against thunderstorms ("grom" in Polish) and wolves, embodying a shield against the forces of nature and darkness.
