JUST WAITING FOR A FRIEND (+ Polyphonic Prose)

At the edge of the road, he sat alone in the twilight and cold. What's it all about? ...no one should be this far out. He hadn't even noticed when I'd stopped, then mumbled something, when the temperature dramatically dropped. Sitting there, he'll soon freeze to death. I asked him his name and he said it was, 'Seth’.

He remarked, "I'm just waiting for a friend.“

When I asked, "Why are you out in this icy white? --- I'm the last truck on such a bad night." He asked, “Then there's no one else coming?" I assured him of that, as he never looked up and just sat.

Again, he replied, "I'm just waiting for a friend.“

"The road is closed now... a free ride I'll extend. I'm the last ride on which you can ever depend." Then he replied, "You made a wrong turn, down a dead end.“

I became more insistent… to assist, I grabbed his left wrist. It broke off when I twisted… Seth was already gone, long before I persisted.

Again, at the end, "I'm just waiting for a friend."
