She was the goddess of the dead. Her name referred to both the west bank of the Nile and to the world of the dead, and the dead were sometimes known as “westerners”.
It was her job to offer food and drink to the newly dead which would restore their spirits enough so they could travel to the 'field of reeds' which is equated with paradise.
Inside tombs, she is drawn as a female human in a red sheath dress. This image of her in cat form could be how she presented herself to various other Gods as she traveled in the world of the dead.
