She'd felt like a soulmate last Saturday, but a lot had happened in the few days before seeing her off, and a lifetime had dragged by since then. So:

I took heart from them; a glimmer of hope.
But ungrounded expectation can prove a slippery slope,

This is one the best portrayals of a ghost figure that I have seen. I presume the woman in the car is a ghost?

There are quite a few layers to the scene, the way you have titled it allows her almost ephemeral image to be his internal visualisation of who is on his mind
