Will sat in front of the small TV in the garage, his eyes glued to the screen, his stomach twisting with every word the news anchor said. The screen showed images of the wreckage from the night before—the twisted, charred remains of the RX-7 and the school bus that had been carrying children home from a late-night field trip. Flames still licked at the metal frame, and thick, black smoke billowed into the night sky.

The news anchor’s voice was somber, almost clinical, as she delivered the devastating report: no survivors. Every child on the bus, the driver, and Tatsuya, the racer whose reckless driving had caused the crash, were dead. Will’s chest tightened as the camera zoomed in on the wreckage, the twisted metal barely recognizable as the once-sleek Mazda RX-7.

Kenji stood beside him, arms crossed, his face pale and expressionless. Daichi leaned against the workbench, eyes locked on the screen. No one spoke. The weight of the silence was suffocating.

Will didn’t respond. His eyes remained fixed on the screen, the reality of what had happened crashing down on him. He’d been racing on those same streets, chasing the same high as Tatsuya, but this time, it had gone too far. Too far for Tatsuya. Too far for those kids.

The anchor’s voice cut through his thoughts again. “Authorities are ramping up their investigation into illegal street racing across Japan. Police believe last night’s deadly crash is linked to an underground racing group operating between Kyoto and Tokyo.”
