Wassily Kandinsky (1866 – 1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist, who is often regarded as one of the pioneers of Abstract Art. Kandinsky's work moved through periods of figurative painting, featuring landscapes and folk scenes, to more abstract forms where he explored the psychological effects of colour and composition. He believed that colours and shapes could represent the spiritual realm and used this philosophy to guide his abstract works, which were pivotal in the development of Abstract Expressionism.
