Charles Maurice Detmold

Maurice Detmold (Charles Maurice Detmold; 1883 – 1908) was a renowned British artist and animalier, known for his work as a painter, illustrator, and etcher. He, along with his twin brother Edward Julius Detmold, exhibited remarkable artistic ability from a young age, with their work often focusing on animal subjects. Their art showed significant influence from traditional Japanese art, Albrecht Dürer, and the Art Nouveau movement. Detmold’s technique involved the use of various mediums such as pencil, watercolour, gouache, and gold paint. He also mastered the printmaking process, often collaborating with his brother in the production of a single plate. Tragically, Detmold’s life was cut short when he committed suicide on 9 April 1908. His twin brother would continue their work alone.
