The real lessons, he figured, were waiting out there, on the streets, with the hum of engines and the thrill of speed.
He fished into the front pocket of his jacket, pulling out a half-eaten nikuman, the fluffy steamed bun warm against his palm. The smell of the savory pork filling mixed with the faint scent of gasoline from the nearby garages. Nikuman had become a quick go-to snack for Will in the last couple of months. The small food stalls outside the school gates always had a fresh batch ready, and the way they fit perfectly in one hand made them easy to munch on while he rushed to meet the local boys.

Japan was nothing like the world he’d grown up in. The streets were alive with neon signs, electric sounds, and the sharp contrast of traditional and modern. Towering skyscrapers reached up to the smoggy sky, while old, wooden houses stood quietly in the shadows of the city’s expansion. In the distance, he could see the Yokosuka Naval Base, where his father spent most of his days.
As Will took another bite of his nikuman, his eyes caught sight of Yumi leaning casually against the low wall by the school entrance. She was talking with a couple of other girls, her smile bright, but it didn’t reach her eyes. Yumi Sato—the girl everyone knew but few dared to approach. Not because she was untouchable, but because her ties to the local racing scene made her more mysterious than most. Everyone knew her father owned the best garage in town, and everyone knew she wasn’t just some bystander in the racing world.
