While they sang Father Anslem incensed the Monstrance and the altar. The incense rose like a prayer and created a haze made by the candlelight. Once the incensation was finished, Father Anslem and the ministers went to their seats.
“I will bless the Lord who giveth me counsel; my heart teacheth me night after night. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not fall,” said Father Anslem. He then went to the center of the sanctuary and faced the people.
“Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, so that we obtain forgiveness by infinite goodness and mercy.” He then knelt at the foot of the altar, and the congregation prayed the prayer of confession that brought Helena to tears on Sunday morning. It still brought her to tears again, though not as bad today.

The congregation stood as Father Anslem returned to his chair and made the sign of the Cross.
“O God make speed to save us,” Father Anselm intoned.
“O Lord make haste to help me,” the people intoned back. Everyone made a profound bow.
“Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost.”
“As it was in the beginning, it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen. Alleluia.”
The choir then sang the ancient hymn, "Phos hilaron". Helena had sung it many times, usually twice a month at Vespers on Mondays. It was a beautiful hymn praising Jesus for the end of the day.
