Baghdad Battery: An Ancient Pain Relieving Device

The Baghdad Battery is a clay jar with a copper cylinder and an iron rod that was found in 1938. It is believed to be around 2,000 years old.

The Baghdad Battery was found in a village near Baghdad. It is made up of three artifacts: *Clay jar: The jar is 14 cm tall, but would have been taller when complete. The top of the jar is broken off and is believed to have been sealed with asphalt. *Copper cylinder *Iron rod If the jar is filled with a weak acid, like vinegar, it produces around 1 volt. However, some say that the battery would be very feeble if only vinegar was used. It is believed to possibly be an early pain relieving device that could have replaced electric fish.
