Starship wreck

During the ark ship's 300-year voyage through space, the AI had degenerated and malfunctioned, and it had failed to properly maintain the colonists' minds in hypersleep. After landing the ship in a swamp on the target planet, it woke its human cargo, but failed to prepare them for their mission to tame and populate this new world. Instead, the bewildered people had cowered in the bowels of the ship, huddling against the warmth of the leaking reactor and interbreeding for countless generations while the deranged AI whispered incessantly into their blank minds. They gnawed on the slimy, fibrous alien vegetation which crept into the ship and covered every surface until the bulwarks and airlocks were unrecognisable. And now here they were - pathetic beings who served only as a mockery of the idealism with which their forefathers had set out to colonise the cosmos.
