Desolate Battlefield: Dark Fantasy Art from the 1970s

In the Dreamlands rests a town where no man may harm a cat. Each feline is the spirit of Dreamers who joined the covenant of the Ulthar Church. Any Dreamers who take their final sleep in the Waking World would be reborn as a immortal cat of Ulthar. The slaying of any cat in the town of Ulthar is punished in the most severe way possible. Every cat is the soul of a Dreamer. The Ulthar Covenant involves Dreamers drinking the blood of Bast, an Egyptian Goddess trapped in the Dreamlands by an unknown force. From then on, only human blood can sustain the cats. The Black Cat is one who chose to shepherd the cats and forgo the exhilarating thrill of life as a supernatural cat. The current Black Cat only vaguely remembers her old life, only her slow death from smoke inhalation. The traumatic death prevented her from maintaining her memories. She's since made new memories in the centuries she's served as the Black Cat, fated to be forever young until she chooses her successor.
