Astrid Magee, Haydee & Stella's Devil

Astrid Magee is a character I've never rendered before, the perpetual beauty pageant runner-up older sister of Haydee. Their mother is a former Miss Tennessee who got stranded in her husband's hometown after she got pregnant the first time and has tried to get both daughters to hate the place as much as she does.

Haydee hates her because she's always been deemed the lesser sister -- short, flat-chested, with fingers too short to play the piano. And Haydee refused to do the pageant thing as soon as she could mouth the words "This is stupid."

Stella hates Astrid for backing over her twin, Sammi, and killing her before they'd even started kindergarten. Astrid had just gotten her license, and even out-of-town judges heard the story before the votes were cast.

It's possible there might have been a decent person under the surface if Brigit Magee, their mother, had run off and left the girls with their father. But she didn't. And there isn't.
