Helena went to help Fairbairn with her habit. Once again, the Scot complained as she put the wimple on, though not as badly as the first time. They fitted their earpieces, and Helena paused for a moment in silent prayer before the two women left the monastery.
“Are you ready?” Fairbairn asked.
“I hope so,” Helena replied. Though she was not sure what to say, she remembered the words of the Gospel:
“And you will be led before governors and kings for My sake as a witness before them and the pagans. When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what to say.”
Fairbairn placed a reassuring hand on Helena’s shoulder. “You’ll do fine, Sister. And I’ll be right beside you the entire time.”
“Thank you, Izzy,” Helena replied with a grateful smile.

As they crossed the village square toward the dissidents’ camp, Edward hurried after them, his lute slung over one shoulder. For a moment he almost didn’t recognize Fairbairn beneath the white wimple and flowing brown habit. The confident RAF officer now looked every bit the Carmelite sister she was pretending to be.
“Miss Fairbairn?”
Fairbairn turned. “Aye?”
Edward hesitated before holding out a small leather cord. “I… made this.”
Fairbairn looked down. It was a simple woven bracelet of blue and brown threads.
“My mother taught me how to braid them,” Edward said shyly. “I know you don’t believe in luck, but… perhaps you could wear it. Just as a reminder that someone here will be praying for you.”
Fairbairn’s reserved expression softened into a warm smile.
“We Scots prefer God’s providence to luck.”
