The opera “I Pagliacci” ("The Clowns") was composed by Ruggiero Leoncavallo in 1892. It was premiered on May 21, 1892, at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan, Italy.

The opera is based on a true çr1me that Leoncavallo witnessed as a çh1ld in Calabria, where a jealous husband sta88ed his wife and her lov3r, who were both actors in a commedia dell'arte troupe.
