In Italy, same-sex civil unions were only approved in 2016 after a lengthy battle in Parliament. Marco and I were the tenth couple to unite in Rome as soon as the law was passed! We've been together for 27 years and certainly weren't waiting for civil unions to consolidate our love. These are simply rights: pension reversion, recognition of spouse status in the event of illness or hospitalization of one of us, and many other things that weren't possible before 2016!
