"The 'Kaapse Klopse' festival was so much more than colourful annual song-and-dance parades. It was a community's institutionalised memory of slaves customarily being permitted to celebrate the New Year a day later than their masters. One day of bright colour and joyous song before another year of drudgery far from a home none expected ever to see again. If only for a fleeting moment, knowing who you were and that you could rise above circumstance was a legacy that had been passed from one generation to the next."
