One of the obsessive repetitions of Lovecraft is that "Cthulhu cannot be described" -- only in "The Call of Cthulhu" the entity is described like "a self-moving mountain with a head similar to an octopus" -- from which every successive representation of Cthulhu as we know it nowadays is derived.
