Annoyed, Ashildr rolled her eyes. _And you want me to believe that? Why did you not just activate your machine over there before and tried to find out what happened?_

_I couldn't. After the fire, when I was trapped down here, the explosions started. I do not know how much time had passed in between. When I felt the force of the first impact, I recognised the technology from... earlier days in our kingdom._

His eyes lost some of its glow.

_I knew what was going to happen outside. So I inserted the core into the loop and activated it to save the people. It made the core run at full capacity - millions of lives imagining at once. There just was no room left for another mind like mine._

_Wait. Save the people from what?_

_From the bombs, of course! You must have heard of the Blitz, the infamous bombing of your country, when the first nuclear bombs fell and caused the great fire that destroyed the Empire?_

_The Blitz did not destroy the country. It was terrible, a lot of people died, but in the end, the country survived. You're lying._

At least, that's what Ashildr hoped for. She had heard Clara talk about how time could be rewritten if you happened to interfere with their timelines. She was not sure if she fully understood this, but what if their appearance at Highclere manor in 1925 had suddenly set things in motion that had altered the course of history? What if the Reich had succeeded in developing the bomb and decided to drop it on London?

_I gave them the life they could never have. I saved them from their torment and made them live._

_But the loop was never designed to sustain a reality this big. It was meant to tap into the minds of one, not of millions. So naturally, there were... glitches. People started to notice them._

_The observant ones tried to puzzle the pieces together and began questioning the city. Why live was so perfect. Why the city had grown so massive. Why they would never leave it. The reality began to glitch more often the more people began questioning it._

_At some stage, I had to resort to more drastic measures and... remove them. Some even in plain sight. I began to insert fear into their minds and they imagined a totalitarian state. A massive, towering city accomodating them with everything their little hearts desired, but living in fear of a police force that made you disappear when you asked too many questions._

_I had build their perfect prison to save them from certain death outside._
