*Clara, when I was a child, I helped my village hunt, gather supplies and repair the fishing nets. It wasn’t until after your surprise visit that I left and… well… apparently I learned to read eventually.* Trying to remember these things hurt. She had not expected this, but it did hurt.

Clara, sensing her pain, gave her an apologetic look, smiled and said: *Hey, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you. I won’t pry. But…* and she took another dive under the console before she returned from the depths with a red book in her hand. *… I will now make you read a book you absolutely MUST have read once or twenty times in your life. Especially when you’re getting moody and a little nonsense might chase the clouds away.*

05/ The downward spiral

*Nooo, I don’t wanna, not another one.* Ashildr cried and stared helplessly at the ceiling. Whenever Clara had said *you absolutely must read this* she wouldn't let go until Ashildr picked up the book and promised to give it a try. Most often, however, she could not really feel the special connection Clara assigned to her book.

She was not against reading books per se, but there were so many stories regarded as classics that either reminded her of a time and age she had once lived in and would have very much liked to not be reminded of (the 17th Earth century held some very unpleasant memories) or told stories she would rather have any recollection of but plain and simply had forgotten about.

Humans weren't build for immortality and Ashildr had to learn it the hard way.

06/ Another one?

Her memory was limited and one day in one life of hers she simply started to forget. It wasn't until then that she had started to journal her experiences and different lives, but even then she had to realise that her apparent immortality did not quite help.

If you live forever, how do you decide which moment is important enough to write down? If you made similar experiences in different eras, is this even noteworthy or just the nature of human life, making similar experiences throughout the ages?

Books did not really help take her mind off things when she had lived in that particular time and age. Mounting a horse, robbing carriages, or managing a secret town full of alien refugees, on the other hand, kept her busy. Adventure, the thrill, dopamine rushing through her veins. She loved everything about this.

07/ Mind set on you

As did Clara, she mused. Why was it that she dived headlong into danger every opportunity she could get? With herself, it was quite easily explained, philosophical and existential musings aside - Ashildr could not die (for long), so she had nothing to fear, really.

But Clara? So fragile, always half a heart-beat away from certain death. And after Gallifrey, even more so.

Ashildr still could not quite wrap her head around the whole "scattered throughout the timeline" thing. She remembered thinking about this for a decade or two at the pocket at the end of the universe, but decided instead of making any sense it only made her head hurt.

Granted, the universe did not make sense either, but it followed certain patterns you could get used to if you had the time. And she had plenty of _that_.
