The Reunion

She had not expected to see him here. Not in this restaurant, not on this night, not with her. She felt a surge of emotions as she recognized his face across the room. He looked older, but still handsome. His hair was graying at the temples, his eyes were crinkled with laughter, his smile was warm and familiar. He was holding hands with a woman who was sitting next to him. A woman who was younger, prettier, and getting more attention than her, the first wife.

She felt a pang of jealousy, anger, and sadness. She wondered how long they had been together, how he had met her, what he saw in her. She wondered if he ever thought of her, if he ever regretted leaving her, if he ever missed her. She wondered if he was happy, if he was in love, if he was faithful. She wondered if she should go over and say hello, or pretend she did not see him, or leave the restaurant as soon as possible.
