I watched a mythbusters and this story stuck, can a cannon ball kill if it flies too close but does not hit, is the shockwave that strong? It's all anecdotal with tales from the Napoleonic Wars to English Naval Battles. The only decent evidence I could find was from the American civil war where there are a few credible documents to suggest close traveling cannon balls caused internal injuries to soilders, but not deaths.
