Frau Holle, also known as Mother Hulda or Old Mother Frost, is a figure rooted in Germanic and Scandinavian folklore. She is depicted as both a benevolent and fearsome goddess, embodying themes of winter, justice, and the cycles of life and death.
Frau Holle predates Christianity and is linked to ancient goddesses like Frigg, Freyja, and Hecate. She represents the earth's fertility, weather, and the spinning of fate.
She is said to bring snow by shaking her featherbed and is associated with seasonal cycles, hearth, and home.
In the Grimm Brothers' fairy tale, she rewards industriousness and punishes laziness. This reflects her role as a harbinger of justice.
Frau Holle was seen as a guardian of the dead and unbaptized children.
Frau Holle's mythology blends elements of nature worship, morality tales, and ancient goddess traditions, making her a multifaceted figure in European folklore:
