John Maynard ist Steuermann auf der "Schwalbe", die von Detroit nach Buffalo fährt. An Bord sind 300 Menschen, darunter Frauen und Kinder. Es ist ein schwüler Sommerabend, der Himmel ist sternenklar.
Plötzlich bricht im Laderaum ein Feuer aus. Panik bricht aus, die Menschen rennen an Deck. John Maynard bleibt am Steuer, um das Schiff zu retten. 
Das Feuer wütet unaufhörlich, die "Schwalbe" sinkt. John Maynard steuert das Schiff auf eine Sandbank. Alle Passagiere und Besatzungsmitglieder können sich retten.
John Maynard selbst kann sich nicht mehr retten. Er geht mit dem Schiff unter und stirbt als Held.
Ein Denkmal in Buffalo ehrt John Maynards Heldentat. Sein Name wird als Symbol für Mut und Opferbereitschaft weiterleben.
