Vincent is superhuman despite being a mutant, not because of it. The way he sees it, if a werewolf has a wolf inside, then he has a kraken inside. Or something even worse. Not that it is that huge; the number 17 comes up a lot. And (fortunately) it's typically both invisible and intangible.
However, as far as the concept goes, they share a common center of mass. This does affect how it deploys its up to 17, elastic tentacles.
A person could casually befriend Vincent for years without ever directly witnessing his, um, constant companion. They'd simply think that sometimes strange things happen when Vincent is around.
The academia wants to help train the pair. Good luck with that!
